Electrical rhythm and pattern generation in cultured neural networks.

A postdoctoral position is available starting September 1st 2009 for three years at the Department of Physiology of the University of Bern to study the mechanisms underlying the generation of rhythmic electrical activity in cultured neural networks. We use cultures of tissue explants and dissociated cells from rat cortex and spinal cord grown on multielectrode arrays (MEAs). We measure multisite extracellular activity by MEA electrodes and single cell intracellular activity by whole cell patch clamp. We aim to reveal the role of the properties of individual cells and their connectivity and plastic changes for the formation of network functions like rhythm and pattern generation.

Ideal candidates will come with a formation (PhD or MD) in medicine, biology or biophysics, good experience in electrophysiological recording techniques especially with single cell patch clamp recording and a strong enthusiasm for neuroscience. Good programming skills with some experience in Igor and Labview are helpful. The successful applicant will work in a small team in an institute with a creative atmosphere and with a large spectrum of available methods.

The position includes teaching obligations (practical courses and tutorials for medical students).
