Postdoctoral Position in Molecular Neuroscience

Job Description

The laboratory of Dr. Joshua Weiner at the University of Iowa seeks a postdoctoral fellow to participate in NIH- and March of Dimes-funded research projects on the molecular control of neural circuit formation. We focus on the γ-protocadherins, a large family of neural cell adhesion molecules that interact in a combinatorial fashion to specify thousands of specific interfaces. We utilize an allelic series of transgenic and knockout mice to explore the role of the γ-protocadherins in synaptogenesis, dendrite arborization, and neuronal survival [see recent publications in Neuron (PMID:22542181), PNAS (PMID:20679223), The Journal of Neuroscience (PMID:19776259), and The Journal of Neurochemistry (PMID:22092001)].

The successful candidate will conduct cutting-edge research utilizing biochemistry (co-IP, GST-pulldowns), cell culture (cell lines and primary neurons), molecular biology (qPCR, transcriptome arrays), genetic (transgenic mouse generation), histology and microscopy (epifluorescence, confocal, two-photon microscopy) techniques. Candidates should hold a Ph.D. degree in one of the life sciences, have a strong, demonstrable record of successful research and publications, and have extensive experience with several of the techniques listed above.

The Weiner lab maintains a large and well-outfitted laboratory space with all essential equipment; the Dept. of Biology’s two-building complex also houses the Carver Center for Genomics and the Carver Center for Imaging, which provide excellent shared instrumentation including Leica confocal and two-photon microscopes, next-generation sequencing, and an authorized Nimblegen array facility. Iowa City is a remarkably cosmopolitan college town of ~90,000, continually ranked as one of the top 10 small cities in which to live, work, and play; the cost of living is low and there is a vibrant culture of live music, art, literature, and outdoor activities.

Salary will follow NIH scale (starting at $39,264) and will be commensurate with experience following the doctoral degree. The initial appointment will be for one year, starting in Fall 2012, with possibility of renewal for up to three more years contingent upon funding and satisfactory performance. Please submit a CV, a brief statement of research interests and experience, and the names of three references to Dr. Joshua Weiner ( For more information:
