The European Molecular Biology Laboratory (EMBL) is one of the highest ranked scientific research organisations in the world. The Headquarters Laboratory is located in Heidelberg (Germany) and the outstations are in Grenoble (France), Hamburg (Germany), Hinxton (UK) and Monterotondo (Italy).
The Sachse group investigates the structures of proteins involved in the clearance of abnormal proteins using single-particle electron cryo-microscopy (cryoEM). In neurodegenerative and protein aggregation diseases, intracellular protein deposits are found in association with cytoplasmic inclusion bodies. The successful applicant will investigate the structure of cytoplasmic inclusion bodies in vitro using single-particle cryoEM to better understand the recognition of intracellular and extracellular protein aggregates and their subsequent cellular degradation. In collaboration with the Peri group at EMBL, we also plan to study the clearance of cytoplasmic bodies in Zebrafish brains using light microscopy imaging methods. The postdoctoral position will be situated in the Sachse group with a joint appointment in the Peri group.
EMBL has outstanding EM-facilities fully equipped in all aspects of cryo-EM including an FEI Polara and a Titan Krios. The computational infrastructure contains a 600-node computer cluster. Furthermore, the laboratory houses the Advanced Light Microscopy Facility (ALMF) that maintains numerous state-of-the-art light microscopes and provides software for fluorescence image analysis.
Qualifications and Experience:
Applicants should hold a PhD in molecular biology, biochemistry, biophysics or related field. Experience in cryo-EM, biochemistry, structural biology or developmental biology is desirable.
EMBL is an inclusive, equal opportunity employer offering attractive conditions and benefits appropriate to an international research organisation.
