for two years initially. The project will be associated to the Center for Sepsis Control and Care (CSCC;

Candida albicans
is the most common pathogenic yeast of humans. In contrast to other fungal pathogens, C. albicans belongs to the normal microbiota of the human intestinal tract and other mucosal surfaces. It usually only causes infections when natural barriers are breached or the immune system is compromised. As part of the microbiome, C. albicans interacts with various bacteria and these interactions likely influence pathogenesis of both fungal and bacterial infections originating in the gastrointestinal tract. As these interactions are only poorly understood to date, we aim to characterize how interactions between C. albicans and pathogenic bacteria influence both colonisation and disease using combinations of in vitro and in vivo approaches.
