Postdoctoral Position in Metalloproteinase Research


A postdoctoral position is available starting on January 1, 2013 in the Department of Biology, West Virginia University. The successful applicant is expected to study the functions of ADAM family metalloproteinases in signal transduction and early vertebrate development using Xenopus tropicalis and mammalian cell culture (Wei et al, Dev. Cell 2010; Wei et al. BMC Evol. Biol. 2010). Excellent opportunities and training also exist for developing the postdoc’s own proposals for external or internal funding as well as teaching/mentoring graduate and undergrad students.
 
We seek a self-motivated researcher with strong interest in protease biochemistry, signal transduction and/or vertebrate development. A Ph.D. in biochemistry, molecular, cell or developmental biology, or a related field is required, with ability to work effectively in the area of protease biochemistry as described above. The candidate should have demonstrated expertise in biochemical and molecular/cellular techniques such as cloning and site-directed mutagenesis, cell/tissue culture, and protein expression and characterization. Good teamwork attitude, multitasking ability and communication skills are also required.
 
Our laboratory occupies nearly 1300 square feet of space in the new Life Sciences Building close to downtown Morgantown, West Virginia. Also included are state-of-the-art aquaculture and microscope facilities as well as a dedicated tissue culture room. Morgantown is a quiet and scenic college town located about 70 miles south of Pittsburgh, PA and within driving distance to most major cities in eastern and central US. The city boasts a relatively low living cost, amiable weather and excellent school districts. The initial appointment for this position is for one year, with the possibility of renewing for up to two additional years contingent upon performance and funding. Salary will be commensurate with experience and skills; a competitive benefit package is also provided.
