Opening For Postdoctoral Fellow - Wellcome Trust Sanger Institute

 Job Ref: 81908
We are looking for a creative and motivated Postdoctoral scientist to join our dynamic, multi-disciplinary research team investigating the mechanisms of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) susceptibility and pathogenesis.
Genome-wide association studies have identified over 163 loci associated with IBD risk in humans. For the majority of the loci the biological mechanism underpinning the association is poorly understood. Bringing together expertise from the human genetics, pathogens and mouse and zebrafish departments, the Wellcome Trust Sanger Institute together with key collaborators at Addenbrookes University hospital and the University of Oxford, has embarked on a major new initiative to functionally characterise many of the associated loci.
The successful candidate will utilise novel transgenic mouse lines, germ free mice, infection challenges and high-throughput intestinal microbiota analysis to elucidate pathogenic mechanisms across the loci. The applicant should have a strong background in intestinal immunology and have an interest in learning about host-pathogen interactions and the biology of host-associated microbial communities during health and disease.
Essential Skills
A PhD in intestinal immunology
Outstanding personal initiative and communication skills
Strong publication record in peer-reviewed journals
Ideal Skills
Cellular immunology
Isolation of immune cells from intestinal tissue
FACS sorting
Cytokine assays
Adoptive transfer
Murine genetics/transgenics
Knowledge of intestinal immune system, particularly in response to infection
Experience with germ-free mice
Other information: Postdoctoral Fellows are typically in their first or second postdoctoral position as part of a period of early career research training.
The Sanger Institute is located near Cambridge, UK on the stunning Wellcome Trust Genome Campus. This growing and dynamic site is the British hub of genomic science. It hosts the European Bioinformatics Institute (EBI), the Centre for Therapeutic Target Validation, a Biodata Innovation Centre and will soon host Genomics England Limited's 100,000 Genomes Sequencing Centre. It is an excellent environment in which to work and collaborate with researchers on campus and around the world and benefit from cross-fertilisation of ideas.
To help researchers to develop their skills and networks, the Institute hosts a range of scientific seminars with internal and invited speakers, scientific group meetings and skills development workshops. In addition the Campus is home to the Wellcome Trust Advanced Course and Scientific Conferences programme and the Wellcome Trust Conference Centre.
Our Benefits include: Defined Benefit Pension Scheme, Group Income Protection, Healthcare scheme, Childcare Vouchers, Nursery and 25 days Annual Leave plus Bank Holidays. We also have a gym, two cafes, a nursery, dining facilities, and a free campus Bus service. Our thriving Sports and Social Club provides many opportunities to meet with people working across the campus.
