Opening For Post Doctoral Fellow: Christchurch

Two years Postdoctoral Fellowship opportunity: Fungal factories for biosynthesis of high value industrial bio products for commercial application.

The Bio molecular Interaction Centre (BIC) at the University of Canterbury is offering a two-year postdoctoral fellowship to a motivated individual with a keen interest development of fungal bio factories for production and commercial application of natural products. The successful candidate will have a PhD with expertise in molecular biology, chemical genetics and/or natural products biosynthesis.

The successful candidate should have an enthusiasm for exciting research and translating science into commercial outcomes, good problem solving ability, excellent communication skills and an aptitude for interacting with a range of individuals with varied backgrounds across academia and industry. You will be working with a diverse group of fungal-derived compounds, which display a wide variety of potent bioactivities against insects, various cancers, multidrug-resistant bacteria and H1N1 influenza. Manufacture of these compounds requires highly complex cellular machinery. In this project, you will be tasked with building on our detailed understanding of the key machinery possessed by the fungi for the production of these compounds to construct new fungal factories. These fungal factories will enable the production of natural products with applications in agriculture, animal health and pest control. This multi-disciplinary MBIE Smart Idea funded project will be supervised by Prof Emily Parker (BIC, UC).

The University of Canterbury is committed to promoting a world-class learning environment through research and teaching excellence, and has a vision statement of 'People Prepared to Make a Difference'. You will have the opportunity to work alongside members of a diverse academic community and enrich your own professional and personal development.
