A wide-ranging ecotoxicological role within a global organization

Our HSE Department provides business support and promotes operational excellence across the supply chain, while guarding on governance issues. The department consists of several expertise groups including Ecotoxicology and Environmental Testing (EET).
EET performs the highest standards of ecotoxicological, fate (a.o. biodegradation) studies and biocidal efficacy studies. It also conducts research into the specific properties of substances and/or product development.
As such, its main activity is substance profiling including classification and labeling, registrations, notifications and assessments. EET also contributes to Safety Data Sheet (SDS) production.

This is an important and specialized role in which you support our business units and customers regarding all ecotoxicological aspects of preparation of regulatory dossiers and in consortia.
You will be joining a multinational and multicultural network of almost 300 highly skilled technical professionals as well as a larger technical community in AkzoNobel. The position is based in Arnhem, the Netherlands.
Within this context you are involved with a wide variety of activities. Among them is the monitoring and validation of studies to be used for hazard assessments. Based on this information, you give advice on the safe handling of hazardous substances in production and use, or in the event of an accident.
You also perform environmental exposure calculations with appropriate models (e.g. EUSES), and you are responsible for independently carrying out environmental risk assessments. Based on your findings, you give advice on the environmental profile of a substance or product.
Beyond this, you critically analyze, contribute to, and write reports and scientific papers. Ideally, you also act as Study Director for acute and chronic guideline studies in the GLP compliant research laboratory.
At all times you liaise with customers, other scientists, technicians and regulatory authorities at an international level to build a network that informs and enables your work.
Working together with other members of the group and department, you guide junior ecotoxicologists and participate in the team’s general HSE activities.
This is a position for a motivated self-starter with significant proven expertise in the field of environmental fate as well as exposure, hazard and risk assessments.
To apply, you should have an academic background in biological science/environmental chemistry/ecotoxicology, with an MSc.or PhD in Environmental Toxicology. With this comes at least 3-10 years working experience in the chemical industry in regulatory ecotoxicology. This will encompass laboratory experience of standard test methods used in ecotoxicology. Ideally, you are a registered toxicologist.
You must be able to perform exposure calculations and have a good working knowledge of the EU Technical Guidance Document (TGD). Knowledge and understanding of regulatory requirements (REACH, GHS) is also essential, along with a (developing) understanding of QSARs, their creation and application.
Above and beyond these technical attributes, you possess project management skills and you are an enthusiastic team player, still keen to adapt your analytical mindset to new challenges.
Good communication skills are therefore important, including fluency in written and spoken English.
