Postdoctoral Associate in Computational Genomics
Applications are invited for a Postdoctoral Fellow in Computational Genomics position in the laboratory of Dr. Steve Parker in the Department of Computational Medicine and Bioinformatics and Human Genetics at the University of Michigan Medical School. The major goal of the lab is to generate mechanistic knowledge about how disease susceptibility is encoded in the non-coding portion of the genome, with a focus on type 2 diabetes. We will accomplish this through an interdisciplinary combination of molecular/cellular and computational methods. Specifically, we will generate multiple high-throughput data sets on the genome, epigenome, transcriptome, and proteome across species and in disease-relevant tissues/cells and use computational approaches to integrate and analyze this data. This postdoctoral position is focused on development and implementation of new integrative analysis techniques with a focus on high-throughput sequencing technologies aimed at generating genome, chromatin, and RNA profiles across species and disease-relevant samples. Specific examples of data the candidate will analyze includes: whole genome sequencing, RNA-seq, ChIP-seq, DNase-seq, ATAC-seq, and bisulfite-seq. A major goal of the lab is to understand enhancer biology; additional computational approaches that integrate cross-species conservation and transcription factor position weight matrices will be utilized. Ideal applicants will have experience with human genetics and current computational biology and bioinformatics methodologies. Additional responsibilities will include collaborating with and oversight of undergraduate and graduate students working on multiple projects. The lab focuses on the boundary between computational and experimental techniques and the applicant will have ample opportunity to work closely with bench research scientists and novel datasets. Importantly, the applicant should be a good fit for the lab culture described above.
The applicant should have (or be near completion of) a Ph.D. in a computational or biological field and a track record of published research commensurate with their field. The applicant should have strong computational skills and proficiency in programming (ideally a combination of Perl/Python and R). The successful candidate will have excellent organization and communication skills, collaborative spirit, and strong personal motivation. Evidence of scholarly productivity in the form of journal articles, conference proceedings, and/or conference presentations is mandatory. English language proficiency is required.
