Use of Sulfuric or Nitric acid in chloride dtermination by Argentometric titration

Good evng experts,I have one question about argentometric titration. When I performed this titration addion of Nitric or sulfuric is mandarty. I want to know why it is, and what is the signiifcance of addion of strong acid. Is it helpful to maitain the pH of solution and at this pH CL atom can snatch from the main moiety. Can we do this titration in highly basic media. If no what is the main reasonBest regardsPraveen
