I just researched this topic. I didn't find any for that price, new. You can go to LabX or another such site for used equipment but beware used readers can have problems and software might no longer be available.

Try this website:

http://www.thermo.com/

They have a Multiskan Ascent plate reader which is capable of reading 96 well plates and 384 well plates in various formats. It also has interchangeble filter capability, meaning that if you need it, you could add in an extra filter for reading at the desired wavelength.

Try MTX lab systems http://www.mtxlsi.com/ They sell used plate readers, some for less than 3K. And unlike some other surplus equipment sites, they guarantee their products.

Most microplate readers have a troubleshooting section in their user's manual. You should look up your error message there. It should tell you if can fix it yourself and how you can do it. If you need to call a rep it should tell you too.

If you state your make and model of machine here then someone may be able to help you more.

We have acquired an old fmax plate reader and have successfully loaded the platereader's software into our PC. However, we are unable to get the PC to recognize [communicate with] the plate reader.

Does anyone have an fmax manual? Only excerpts are available from the manufacturer.

Alternatively, is there a reader who uses the fmax plate reader and can give us his/her suggestions?

Thanks for your help!

Does this use a serial port, and does your pc have a serial port on the motherboard, PCI card or do you use a USB-Serial convertor?
Also, the Molecular Devices Softmax series software requires a security key/network license if I remember right. You should contact your reseller about that.

Also, keep in mind Molecular Devices policy:
SoftMax Pro Updates and Upgrades

To check for SoftMax Pro updates and upgrade offers, follow these steps:

1. Log-in to the web site. If you have never registered on the MDC web site, you must do that first.
2. Go to Registered Products & Software Upgrades.
3. If your copy of SoftMax Pro is not listed, press the Register New Products button to register your copy. Enter any Promo Code that you may have received in a letter in your SoftMax Pro package.
4. Back on the Registered Products page, click on the SoftMax Pro link to check for software updates, or SoftMax Pro 5 upgrade offers or downloads.

Note: Software obtained from unauthorized resellers is considered in violation of the MDC software license agreement which states that SoftMax Pro and SoftMax Pro GxP are non-transferable.
