Phosphodiesterase type 4 (PDE4) plays an important role in modulating the activity of cells that are involved in the inflammatory processes occuring in chronic obstructive pulmonary diseases and asthma. Targeting PDE4 by inhibitors of this enzyme is the most advanced line of research in the respiratory pipeline.
