Can anyone explain some of the effects hydrogen sulfide has on cells and the body, to help me understand the ability of it to induce a hybernation like state in mice?

H2S is a specific inhibitor of complex IV in the electron transport chain. The potential for recovery comes from the reversibility of inhibition. The paper can be found in Nature if you want to check out all their experimental methods.
