Otoliths, small mineralized structures in the inner ear, are formed by a process which requires the activity of cilia. Morpholino knockdowns of dynein-related proteins inhibit otolith formation.

Colantonio JR, Vermot J, Wu D, Langenbacher AD, Fraser S, Chen JN, Hill KL. The dynein regulatory complex is required for ciliary motility and otolith biogenesis in the inner ear. Nature. 2008 Nov 30. [Epub ahead of print]
