Midwest Research Institute (MRI) is one of the nation’s premier research organizations in the fields of national security and defense. For more than 40 years, MRI has provided the U.S. Government with vital services to help protect America’s citizens and soldiers from chemical and biological attacks.


If you would like to contribute to our country’s safety and well-being while also embarking on an exciting career using your talents and experiences as a chemist, consider a position as Staff Chemist at MRI’s National Capital Region Laboratory in Rockville, Maryland.


This position will provide analytical chemistry support for multiple projects, conducting sample analysis and interpretation analytical data. The position will also contribute as needed to research proposals and reports.

Additional responsibilities are:

Provides leadership and training to technical staff on analytical procedures and instrumentation.
Develops Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs).
Conducts experimental work on projects; sets up the procedures and performs the experiment based on established protocols, developed procedures, or experimental designs; keeps records of experiments performed and all data collected.
Reviews data for accuracy and completeness.
Conducts standard data analysis as directed by project leader.
Analyzes, checks, tests, and evaluates data.
Performs peer review of data and reports.

Position will require staff member to work in a classified environment and meet the needs of MRI clients.

Qualifications

Ph.D. in Chemistry or related sciencewith minimum of 3 years experience, or M.S. in Chemistry or related science with minimum of 6 years experience or B.S. in Chemistry or related science with minimum of 9 years experience.
Demonstrated hands-on experience with one or more of the following analytical platforms: Mass Spectrometry, FTIR, RAMAN, XRF and PLM.
Ability to analyze samples, troubleshoot, make repairs to laboratory instruments and analyze results.
Experience in a research environment, basic analytical skills, sample preparation/tracking data, thorough understanding of relevant federal regulations, QA/Safety/SOPs and instrumentation.
Ability to effectively communicate and interact with technical staff at all levels in a team-based environment.
Ability to work independently and assist team members.
Detail oriented.
Preference will be given to candidates who possess a minimum U.S. Government SECRET clearance.

Applicants selected will be subject to a government security investigation and must meet eligibility requirements for access to classified information. In order to meet the government security investigation requirements, U.S. citizenship is a prerequisite.
