Pharmaceutical company, please review the following opportunity: Research Scientist - Organic Chemistry – Process Development In the synthesis of pharmaceutical candidate compounds, this area develops chemical processes, which minimize the cost of production while minimizing environmental impact. This is done by conducting organic synthesis experiments and developing synthetic routes, preparing various quantities of materials (milligrams to kilograms) for use by the program/project team customers, and interfacing with analytical chemistry, engineering, manufacturing, and formulation for the successful scale-up of the chemical process. KEY
OBJECTIVES/DELIVERABLES:
1. Leading Synthetic Method Development Projects
o Represent Process Development at project team meetings.
o Work with Discovery to identify improvement needs for early stage projects.
o Develop project information work plans, as well as material delivery plans.
o Update the plans based on the progress of the project.
o Provide progress status report to the project team.
o Develop and deliver preclinical materials for biological and toxicological studies.
o Develop efficient, practical, and scalable synthesis for Phase I and Phase II clinical studies.
o Participate in technology transfer activities for both kilo-lab and pilot plant campaigns.
o Deliver bulk drug candidate material for clinical trials.
o Present the issues, results and project progress to the project team and other business units.
2. Bench Work – Refining or Improving Procedure to Improve Yields, Purity, Safety, and Reduce Cost
o Review Discovery Chemistry methods for scale up possibilities.
o Generate possible solutions and ideas for method improvements.
o Design synthesis process.
o Run experiments to test hypothesis.
o Analyze results and data; suggest future experimental plan.
o Net work with partners for analysis.
3. Improving Lilly’s Research and Development Effectiveness
o Encourage and integrate ?best practice? and standards in the design and development of solutions.
o Based on needs, develop and introduce new techniques, methods, and processes to improve business effectiveness.
o Encourage sharing different perspectives during technical discussions.
o Generate new ideas or methods to resolve problems.
o Reorganize or reinterpret existing data or information to develop new initiatives or different approach to problems.
o Work with external third parties to achieve both information and material goals.
4. Employee Management and Development
o Recruit and interview to hire new employees.
o Meet with direct reports routinely to identify and assess areas need improvement, provide guidelines, establish good relationship.
o Evaluate direct reports’ performance, provide feedback and suggestions for improvement.
o Coach direct reports for performance improvement.
o Act as mentor to other chemists and provide suggestions for their work improvement.
o Meet with direct reports weekly or more often to obtain data and information regarding the lab work in order to develop their scientific skills and knowledge.
o Examine and review experiment set up with direct reports to ensure lab safety.
5. Growth in Scientific Community
o Participate internal and external professional scientific activities.
o Become knowledge expert in selected areas.
o Identify and foster external collaborations that increase technical capabilities of department.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS: Ph D. in Organic Chemistry or a related area. At least 3 years work experience, since completing your Ph.D. degree or post doc, in organic chemistry process development.
ADDITIONAL SKILLS/PREFERENCES: Knowledge of GMP. Knowledge of kilo-lab and pilot plant operations. Knowledge of API/drug product interface issues. Knowledge and operations skills of GC, HPLC, NMR, GCMS. Up-to-date knowledge of new technologies relating to chemical processes. Communication skills, team working skills.
