I was curious as to whether Taq can amplify RNA template at all?

The easy answer is no.
Common polymerases are;
reverse transcriptase -- DNA from RNA templates
DNA polymerase (like Taq) -- DNA from DNA templates
RDRP (RNA Dependent RNA polymerase) -- RNA from RNA template

Invitrogen makes a product called Superscript One Step RT-PCR Polymerase. It allows for first strand synthesis and subsequent PCR to occur in one reaction. It works by inactivating the DNA polymerase (a mutated Taq in this case) through inactivation by an antibody. You perform a standard RT reaction then activate the DNA polymerase in the first annealing reaction.

by the way I am not affiliated with Invitrogen
