Staff Scientist I

The confocal microscopy group within the Genzyme Pathology collaborates with investigators and other members of the confocal group to design and implement animal model- and cell culture-based studies utilizing advanced microscopy techniques as the primary readout. Imaging modalities to be utilized include human interactive and automated confocal microscopy, fluorescence correlation spectroscopy, time lapse recording, macroscopy, widefield fluorescence microscopy and structured illumination. In this position, development of fluorescence-based assays, custom image analysis algorithms, and downstream statistical tools will be used to extract biological information from image datasets. Biological interpretation, report writing, communication of results to investigators, and quality control will be critical aspects of the position. The position will involve mostly team-based work with some opportunity for independent research. You will interact with diverse groups in the Genzyme Science and Manufacturing organizations. Imaging/image analysis approaches currently used within the group include confocal microscopy, fluorescence correlation spectroscopy, high content analysis, widefield microscopy with or without structured illumination, brightfield and fluorescence macroscopy, and development of custom image analysis algorithms using a variety of software packages.

Basic Qualifications: PhD in cell biology or the life sciences and a maximum of 3 years academic or industrial laboratory experience. Requires 2+ years cell culture and immunofluorescence/ immunohistochemistry staining experience.

Preferred Qualifications: Thorough understanding of the principles of confocal and widefield fluorescence microscopy, cell biological processes and basic tissue architecture. Rigorous experimental design experience and able to develop and troubleshoot novel fluorescence-based assays. One or more years experience using Metamorph, Imaris, and/or Matlab image analysis software and 1 or more years experience with Visual Basic programming. One or more years experience using standard biochemical and molecular biological techniques such as in situ hybridization, PCR, agarose gel electrophoresis, standard subcloning and restriction analysis, preparation of protein extracts from cells and tissues, immunoprecipitation, SDS-PAGE and Western blot analysis will also be helpful. Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
