Dear Small Business Research Community, The 10th Annual NIH SBIR/STTR Conference is just around the corner (July 22-23)! If you are interested in attending, you must book your hotel by JUNE 23 to receive the conference rate. The agenda, registration (a modest $150) and other conference information are available at the conference website: (http://grants.nih.gov/grants/funding/sbirconf2008/index.htm). Please note that this year's meeting, which will be held in Atlanta, will be the ONLY NIH-focused SBIR/STTR conference this year. Spread over two-consecutive days, you will learn about the "ins and outs" of the NIH (and CDC) SBIR/STTR program; the NIH e-application, review and award process; funding opportunities available to small business researchers; university-industry partnership opportunities; leveraging your State resources; manufacturing strategies; how the NIH SBIR/STTR program can be a valuable resource for biomedical/behavioral researchers who have the "entrepreneurial audacity" to pursue an innovative idea that has commercial potential and much more!
As in the past, topics at our conference are focused toward those who are new to the SBIR/STTR programs as well as those who are more experienced. Whether you were funded or unfunded, this conference will provide a lot of useful information. The material is timely and reflective of new opportunities, updates, and changes (e.g., electronic submission, gap funding programs, commercialization assistance programs). You will even have an opportunity to see a live business presentation to investors and their critique. In addition we are offering two workshops this year that may be of interest to you: 1) Hands-on Lab for Electronic Submission 2) Indirect Costs Rates and Non-Federal Audit Requirements Workshop Finally, while viewing slides and attending workshops are fantastic, nothing can replace the personal interaction and individualized attention that you will be afforded over these two days. Looking over feedback from the past 9 years, THE biggest highlight is the opportunity to meet one-on-one with NIH Program, Review and Grants Management staff, and yours truly to discuss your innovative ideas and how your technology/research interest "fits" within the NIH mission. Below is a current list of the NIH IC and CDC staff that will be represented and with whom you can meet one-on-one: Center for Scientific Review http://www.csr.nih.gov National Cancer Institute http://www.nci.nih.gov National Center for Research Resources http://www.ncrr.nih.gov National Center on Minority Health and Health Disparities http://www.ncmhd.nih.gov National Eye Institute http://www.nei.nih.gov National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute http://www.nhlbi.nih.gov/index.htm National Institute on Aging http://www.nia.nih.gov National Institute of Allergies and Infectious Diseases http://www.niaid.nih.gov National Institute of Biomedical Imaging and Bioengineering http://www.nibib.nih.gov National Institute of Child Health and Human Development http://www.nichd.nih.gov National Institute of Diabetes, Digestive and Kidney Diseases http://www.niddk.nih.gov National Institute on Drug Abuse http://www.nida.nih.gov National Institute of General Medical Sciences http://www.nigms.nih.gov National Institute of Mental Health http://www.nimh.nih.gov National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke http://www.ninds.nih.gov/ National Institute of Nursing Research http://www.ninr.nih.gov National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research http://www.nidcr.nih.gov/ Centers for Disease Control and Prevention http://www.cdc.gov/ I look forward to seeing and meeting many of you at the conference and to celebrating the Silver anniversary of SBIR with you.

......................... "To those who would tear the world down: We will defeat you. To those who seek peace and security: We support you. And to all those who have wondered if America's beacon still burns as bright: Tonight, we proved once more that the true strength of our nation comes not from the might of our arms or the scale of our wealth, but from the enduring power of our ideals: democracy, liberty, opportunity and unyielding hope."
