hello mac users,
which cloning/DNA software do you use? what can you recommend? (please real mac users only, i can google!)
thanks a lot!
anyone using macplasmap?
p.s.: invitrogen that offers vector NTI told me, that the version for mac does not run with leopard os x.5. they gave it to a company that told them they would have to rewrite the program.
they told me that most mac users are academic users and do not pay for the software. and with dual core they can
(short sighted decision: we in academia buy a lot of chemicals and reagents from invitrogen. they should look what they make money from, but all that is a different topic)

It's interesting to hear that someone has problems with DNA cloning software as a result of their Mac OS being TOO NEW! My favorite wee package had been DNA strider (sure not nearly as many possibilities as with DNAStar, but very simple and quick to use for 90% of the cloning work I need to do) but because it only runs under Classic (and not system X) I've been looking for alternatives. So far what looks best, and costs nothing, is Serial Cloner. It works in a similar way to DNA Strider and does work under 10.5: http://serialbasics.free.fr/Serial_Cloner.htmlI hope this is useful PM P.S. I used to use MacPlasmap too, but this was really only a package for "drawing" pretty plasmid maps rather than doing pre-cloning analyses etc.

You're welcome - good luck with it.
...and if you hear of an application that is able to convert hundreds of DNA Strider files into Serial Cloner files - let me know ;)

Hi parvoman Thanks for being so nice about Serial Cloner (thanks also to Gansta). I am actually the developer of Serial Cloner. I do not understand why you would need a software to transform files from DNA Strider format to Serial Cloner format. Serial Cloner reads by default DNA Strider files. Its format is actually an "extended" DNA Strider format and DNA Strider actually can read Serial Cloner files. Hope it helps. Tnaks for using Serial Cloner, Best, Franck.

That's a nice suprise! I'll try this out today. If all goes well this means that I can update my MacOS, re-join the internet community (including Scientist Solutions, which is not running on 10.1.4) and stop using this Dell box!

I tried to run Serial Cloner on my Mac with system 10.1.4, but it did not work. I know it works well on other macs with newer system software so I'll try opening some of my old Strider files on those from a USB drive.

Yes, I must say that I did not try it under 10.1 since a while. Could you make it work under more recent system to open your DNA Strider files ? Otherwise, please, feel free to contact me at contact@serialbasics.com

I've tried opening the old strider files using Serial Cloner on a colleague's Mac running a more current OS and it works.
Then I tried to install OSX 10.5 (Leopard) on my G4 Mac (1GHz) but the installation failed. I'll check a Mac Fourum to see if I can get to the bottom of this. (according to Apple, the system should work on G4s with 867MHz....Ah...it requires 512Mb RAM and I only have the 256Mb the computer came with - never had a problem with this until now though....I'll see if I can recycle some RAM from an old G4 I canibalized last week for its power supply!)
