Research Chemist (Crystallographer)
The School of Chemical Sciences (SCS) seeks a full-time (12 month) regular academic professional as Research Chemist (crystallographer) to manage the School’s X-ray facility and materials laboratory. The lab provides a complete structural chemistry service with state-of-the-art hardware and software systems that allow for detailed crystallographic analysis of materials from minerals to macromolecules, but especially small molecules. In addition to performing experiments for School faculty, this position is responsible for maintaining the instruments, providing user support and training, supervising facility staff, assisting in preparation of instrument proposals, and overseeing financial reports. The position reports to the School director.
Salary: Commensurate with qualifications and experience.

Starting date: As soon as possible after closing date.

Closing date: For full consideration, all application material (including cover letter, curriculum vitae, 3 letters of reference) must be received by 5:00pm on the closing date of June 30, 2008. Applicants may be interviewed before the closing date; however, no hiring decision will be made until after that date.

Application: SCS prefers that applications be submitted through the online application at http://www.scs.uiuc.edu/scs_applicants. Include a cover letter, curriculum vitae, and three references. We strongly recommend that you fill out the online application form as soon as you have assembled the names and email addresses of 3 references. This will create your application file, after which you (and your letter writers) will be able to upload application documents and reference letters. If necessary, applications (including email address) may be mailed to Attn: Research Chemist Search Committee, School of Chemical Sciences, 106 Noyes Lab, 505 S. Mathews Ave., Urbana, IL 61801.

Technical questions: Thomas Rauchfuss (217-333-7355, rauchfuz@uiuc.edu). Application-related questions: Cheryl Kappes (217-333-5070, scs_apply@scs.uiuc.edu).

The University of Illinois is an Affirmative Action Equal Opportunity Employer.

Requirements
Minimum qualifications: PhD in chemistry, biochemistry, physics, or related field, OR bachelor’s or master’s in same with 5+ years experience; effective interpersonal skills.
Desired qualifications: Prior experience in small molecule crystallography; knowledge of SMART, APEX, and, ideally, GADDS (WAXS), and SAXS; hands-on experience guiding users on these instruments.
