would like some recommendations as to the most practical and cost effective manual bacterial identification kits.

There are a lot listed on the FDA BAM manual site--API has a short shelf life and BBL Crystal kits require a lot of expensive supplies.

Most of my identification needs relate to environmental contaminants (not usually pathogenic bacteria as implied by the placement of your post); however, I have had very good success with the BBL Crystal ID Kit. I have found they are very easy to use and read. Also, contrary to your post, I have found any auxiliary testing supplies are not very expensive (and the tests simple testing that most microbiology labs should be able to perform).

Additionally, I have had success with the Biolog identification system. Ideally, this system is peformed with an automated reader but the plate wells can be read manually (with high consistency in results).

Thanks for the helpful input--currently we are getting our I.D.'s done out side foe very reasonable ~ $30/sample. Have looked some at the Biolog system and it is attractive.
