Charles Robert Darwin was born February 12th 1809... His seminal work "On the Origin of Species" was published in 1859.

To celebrate the up and coming 150th anniversary of the book's publication guardian.co.uk has created The Definitive Guide to The Origin of Species.

The website contains extracts from key chapters and essays from leading scientists and thinkers, so such as...

Why Darwin Matters
Big enough to undermine the idea of creation but simple enough to be stated in a sentence, the theory of natural selection is a masterpiece, writes Richard Dawkins

Some common misconceptions of Darwinian Theory
Darwin was no atheist, he didn't say humans came from monkeys, and 'survival of the fittest' - that was someone else's idea. John van Wyhe clears up some myths

Natural selection is not an obstacle to religious faith
Despite efforts by individuals on both sides of the argument to suggest otherwise, Darwinian science and belief are compatible, says Richard Harries

The book that changed the world
On the Origin of Species, an instant bestseller, drew both applause and fury, writes Tim Radford

What would Darwin have made of the Human Genome Project?

How Darwin anticipated the "intelligent design" argument

The best Darwinian sites on the web

In this cartoon, circa 1871, the gorilla is saying: "That man wants to claim my pedigree. He says he is one of my descendants." Mr Bergh (the founder of the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals) replies: "Now, Mr Darwin, how could you insult him so?"

And here is a link for the Darwin Day Celebration
AN INTERNATIONAL RECOGNITION OF SCIENCE AND HUMANITY

And here is the excerpt from the site describing what Darwin Day Celebration is...

Darwin Day is an international celebration of science and humanity held on or around February 12, the day that Charles Darwin was born on in 1809. Specifically, it celebrates the discoveries and life of Charles Darwin -- the man who first described biological evolution via natural selection with scientific rigor. More generally, Darwin Day expresses gratitude for the enormous benefits that scientific knowledge, acquired through human curiosity and ingenuity, has contributed to the advancement of humanity.

The Darwin Day Celebration website provides resources and publicity for individuals and institutions across the world to celebrate science and humanity every year, on, or near, February 12, Darwin's birthday. In addition to information about the life and legacy of Charles Darwin, this website provides practical examples, advice and templates for organizing and publicizing Darwin Day events. It also provides a directory of events where you can find celebrations taking place near you or register your own event for others to find.

Recognizing science as an international language accessible to all individuals and societies, the Darwin Day Celebration provides a new global holiday that transcends separate nationalities and cultures. Darwin Day can be celebrated in many different ways: civic ceremonies with official proclamations, educational symposia, birthday parties, art shows, book discussions, lobby days, games, protests, and dinner parties. Organizers may include: academic societies, science organizations, freethought groups, religious congregations, libraries, museums, galleries, teachers and students, families and friends. In Darwin Day, we are able to recognize the diversity among us, while celebrating our common humanity and the universal understanding we share.

Good stuff. I love this quote

"Have we any right to assume that the Creator works by intellectual powers like those of man?"

"To those who would tear the world down: We will defeat you. To those who seek peace and security: We support you. And to all those who have wondered if America's beacon still burns as bright: Tonight, we proved once more that the true strength of our nation comes not from the might of our arms or the scale of our wealth, but from the enduring power of our ideals: democracy, liberty, opportunity and unyielding hope." -- Barack Obama, Nov. 4, 2008
