FACULTY POSITIONS IN THE DISCIPLINE OF GENETICS
VPA # MEDI-2006-003 & MEDI-2006-004
The Discipline of Genetics is currently expanding its activities, building on a substantial record of achievement in internationally recognized research. As part of this expansion, we are soliciting applications for individuals to fill two positions at the level of Assistant or Associate Professor of Human Genetics (tenure-track). The successful applicants must have a PhD or MD/PhD and have completed postdoctoral training with a strong research record in human genetics.
The Discipline of Genetics is based within the Medical School which is located in the Health Sciences Centre on the St. John's campus of Memorial University. The Discipline offers a graduate program in Human Genetics and has an associated clinical program providing comprehensive genetic services to the province of Newfoundland and Labrador.
Newfoundland and Labrador presents a unique opportunity for clinical, molecular and complex disease research in a genetic isolate. Areas of current research strength include inherited cancers, eye disease, cardiomyopathies, obesity and diabetes. Collaborative research is encouraged and it is anticipated that the interests of the applicants will complement the areas of current strength. Applicants will be expected to be competitive for extramural funding to support their own research program. In particular we seek applicants (i) with expertise in Population Genetics, Genetic Epidemiology or Statistical Genetics, (ii) those with expertise in Molecular Genetics, or (iii) those with any combination of these specialties.
Memorial University is the largest university in Atlantic Canada. As the provinces only university, Memorial plays an integral role in the educational and cultural life of Newfoundland and Labrador. Offering diverse undergraduate and graduate programs to almost 18,000 students, Memorial provides a distinctive and stimulating environment for learning in St. Johns, a very safe, friendly city with great historical charm, a vibrant cultural life, and easy access to a wide range of outdoor activities.
All qualified candidates are encouraged to apply; however, Canadian citizens and permanent residents will be given priority. Memorial University is committed to employment equity and encourages applications from qualified women and men, visible minorities, aboriginal people and persons with disabilities.
