Responsibilities

Position Title: Biochemical Engineer 2 or 3
Home Org: Adv. Biological Sciences
Work Location: IRC

Applies advanced chemical engineering concepts to challenging microbial systems research and technology development activities. Works independently and as a team to identify and solve significant research questions in the field of biotechnology. Independently sets up and performs a variety of unique laboratory research studies to prove new principles and concepts. Collects, assimilates, and interprets laboratory data. Is responsible for planning research tasks and assessing and applying a wide range of research techniques to those tasks. Serves as a technical resource to others and is frequently responsible for mentoring and/or oversight of junior level scientists. Serves as a major or sole contributor to the generation of reports, publications, proposals, and intellectual property. Contributes to the generation of proposals and concepts submitted for external funding. Represents the Department to sponsors and peers through programmatic and technical presentations. Provides input to Departmental business plans.

This position requires an applicant who will bring innovation, insight, newfound ideas, and modernization to our processes, and support BEA's long range goals of creating a diverse workforce that is committed to laboratory excellence and the fulfillment of strategic objectives.

Qualifications

Engineer 2:
Ph.D. in microbiology, biochemistry, or chemical engineering required.

Engineer 3:
Ph.D. in microbiology, biochemistry, or chemical engineering plus 3 years of related experience required.

- Special Requirements:
Three years of research experience with extremophilic microbes required.
Two years of mass spec protein/peptide analytical experience required.
Two years of PCR experience required.
Two years of microbial transformation experience required (preferably with extremophiles).
Familiarity with HPLC, IC, and thin-layer chromatography highly desirable.
Proven ability to generate peer-reviewed publications from research required
