I just read an article in Genetics, Vol. 175, 1597-1606, April 2007 that I found extrememly interesting, and probably of interest to many of you folks in the genetics fields.

The article discusses how the aod-1 Gene in Neurospora crassa is encoded for alternative oxidase , and is induced when the mitochondria cytochrome-mediated respiratory chain is inhibited. The research this article was based on was an attempt to discover which elements are responsible for the induction of the alternative oxidase by creating mutations upstream from the aod-1 structural gene.
Using an in-vivo assay, the research team was able to identify an alternative oxidase induction motif (AIM) that is required for expression of aod-1 gene. The article is referenced below if you'd like to investigate the details of this technique.
