Conference Summary
A so-called virtual stockpile, which can be built from countries that agree to donate a portion of their vaccine, could guarantee some vaccine would be equitably distributed within the developing world in the event of a pandemic, Dr. David Heymann, WHO's top flu official, told The Associated Press. A long-term goal would be for poor countries to receive enough technology and training to produce vaccines.

The threat of a deadly Pandemic Influenza grows with each passing day as; the H5N1 (Bird Flu) Virus continues to spread. The World Health Organization (WHO), The Centres for Disease Control & Prevention (CDC) in the United States of America and other leading Health Authorities in Asia, Europe, and the Caribbean and around the world are urging Governments and nations to prepare for the likelihood of a Global Pandemic strain of Avian Flu. Experts from around the globe are in agreement that the outbreak is a matter of time. The impact is predicted to be much more devastating than the tsunamis in Asia. The damage to national infrastructure, air transport, shipping, industry, farming, health services and survivability will be catastrophic and immeasurable.

The present strain of influenza, H5N1 was first discovered in Hong Kong in 1997. Today, it is thought that up to 200 million birds, mainly in South East Asia could be infected with the deadly strain of the virus. There is much evidence of the spread of the virus throughout in at least half of the European Union, including Greece, Germany, Italy and France.

The closure of borders, the suspension of international trade, the tourist industries are just a few of the activities on which curtailment or cessation could result in billions of dollars lost, which many countries would be unable to recover during the long years of business re-commencement and reconstruction. It is predicted that the death toll from Pandemic Influenza could exceed 62 million lives.

This conference will focus on the worldwide impact of Avian Flu on all aspects of daily life. The damage to countries' infrastructure, its people and business recovery will be highlighted.

Two inter-active master classes will form integral parts of the conference make-up.
