The BC Cancer Agency (BCCA) is committed to reducing the incidence of cancer, reducing the mortality from cancer, and improving the quality of life of those living with cancer. It provides a comprehensive cancer control program for the people of British Columbia by working with community partners to deliver a range of cancer services, including prevention, early detection, diagnosis and treatment, research, education, supportive care, rehabilitation and palliative care. It operates four regional cancer centres in the Fraser Valley, Kelowna, Vancouver and Vancouver Island. The BC Cancer Research Centre conducts research into the causes and cures for cancer.
BCCA is an agency of the Provincial Health Services Authority (PHSA) which plans, manages and evaluates specialty and province-wide health care services across BC.
SUMMARY:
Reporting to the Head of Cancer Genetics, the Genetic Fieldworker (GFW) performs a variety of duties related to genetic and epidemiologic research studies. Accountabilities include study subject recruitment and follow-up including obtaining informed consent for subject participation, oversight of the collection and transfer of biological samples including subject and control blood samples to the cancer genetics laboratory, assisting/contributing to research study design and the development of research tools, ensuring informed consent by all study participants, seeking institutional review board (IRB) approvals and renewals as needed, maintenance of an appropriately anonymized sample database and study administration.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
A level of education, training, and experience equivalent to a BSc. in Science, Social Science, Population Sciences or Nursing; with 6-12 months direct experience conducting patient-based medical research studies or in research study co-ordination including direct or telephone contact with patients or other research study participants. Demonstrates excellent interpersonal skills including the ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing with others including Cancer Genetics group staff, study participants, collaborating physicians and other staff. Experience with clinical settings and with clinical personnel. Demonstrated computer skills including the ability to work in an intermediate Microsoft Office environment and to use and maintain medical databases. Experience working directly or by phone with patients or other research study participants. Knowledge of the nature and up-to-date requirements for informed consent and awareness of the ethical considerations of genetic research. Familiarity with the requirements of institutional review board (IRB) approval. Experience with the shipping and transfer requirements of blood and other biological samples. Demonstrated organizational skills; the ability to work independently and under time constraints and within an environment of changing priorities. Demonstrated ability to learn on the job.
