I have found the Pierce SuperSignal West Pico Chemiluminescent kit with stablized peroxide to work very well - my experience with the Pierce product has been better than with Amersham.

You can also detect mRNA presence/production with a branched-DNA (dBNA) detection probe set for the protein of interest. Results are directly amplified from the mRNA in cell lysate, and yield a chemiluminescent signal that is quantifiable with any light-sensitive reader. (May require a custom probe set if none for your target protein are commercially available).

I too have tried both Pierce and Amersham kits. I don't really like Pierce, though. Amersam ECL and ELC Plus work better in my hands.

I use Pierce... but a batch crapped up on me due to production fault... then I tried Santa Cruz... it was good.
Now back to Pierce....
Definitely beats Amersham in terms of stability and luminescence.
