Laboratory of Medical Molecular Virology was established in 1985 and has been designated as the key lab on medical molecular virology by the Ministry of Health in 1986 and the Ministry of Education in 2001. At present, Professor Yumei Wen , member of the Academy of Engineering, holds the position of chairman for scientific committee and Professor Zhenghong Yuan as the director. The principal field of research has been focused on persistent viral infections, especially hepatitis B and C viruses, with the goal of understanding the molecular mechanisms involved and ultimately developing effective treatment strategies for persistent viral infections. For the last ten years, encouraging results on the mechanisms and control strategies of chronic hepatitis B virus infection have been obtained. With their achievements, scientists of this field have won more than 10 Science and Technology prizes, including State Natural Science third prize once, State Science and Technology third prize once, first award sponsored by the Ministry of Education twice, first award sponsored by the Shanghai Municipal Government once, second award sponsored by the Ministry of Public Health four times. Currently, there are funding from the State Science Commission, State National Science Commission, Ministry of Education, Shanghai Municipal Government and oversea's foundations. The research field has been further extended to microbial genomics and cellular microbiology. This lab has all the necessary equipments for research work on molecular virology, microbiology and immunology. The good research conditions and free academic atmosphere shown here have attracted a lot of promising young scientists home and abroad to join in. Laboratory of Medical Molecular Virology has become a well-known research center for viral and bacterial infections.
