These are cytokine receptors triggered by ligands such as: Interferons ; most of interleukins; growth hormones; prolactine; erythropoietin; thrombopoietin; granulocyte-macrphage colony stimulating factor. JAK stands for Janus Kinase and STAT is for Signal Transducer and Activator of Transcription. The JAK-STAT pathways are much shorter and simpler than the pathways triggered by RTKs (Receptor Tyrosine Kinases). For more information please study books or publications about cell signaling.

It is worth to check out the recent reviews - Yu & Jove Nature Reviews Cancer 2004, and Heinrich PC et al. Biochem J 2003.

Honestly, another place to get essential nutshell info. on these pathways is product catalogs--e.g. the back of the Cell Signaling Technology catalog gives decent diagrams and short descriptions of all the major ST pathways, along with selected citations for reviews--in fact, the section on Jak/Stat signaling on p. 380 of their '05-'06 catalog includes the Heinrich paper you cited.

The company name is Cell Signaling Technology, Inc., which is somehow affiliated with New England Biolabs (maybe an offshoot of NEB ?) in Beverly Massachusetts. They sell reagents for signal transduction research. The info. I referred to above is in their 2005-06 print catalog which is readily available; their URL is www.cellsignal.com, and I'm sure the same info. is on their web site. The reference for the Heinrich paper is Biochem J. 374:1-20, 2003.
