Hello All,
I am using the Elan 6100 ICP-MS very first time.
I am kind of scared to remove the cones and clean because its completely jammed in.
Also, when I did my daily performance the background was really high at 220.
Please suggest.
Thank you

The cones should be "jammed in" you should wiggle them out little by little. What is the background? The background always makes me think of the DP appeture. What values are you getting on your daily performance, counts, RSD's and %?

Hello Riverbrat,
Thank you for replying and helping.
I wiggled the cones and cleaned .
But I am getting very low intensities for Rh and Pb around 3000 on my daily performance that also
are not consistent every day.
The intensity for Magnesium is meeting the specification of being above 20,000, I am getting Magnesium
around 36,000. I spoke to technical help in the distributer of the icpms , they
say the machine is out of tune. and if you want help you will have to order the mass stability solution.
Please suggest how do I go about it.
thankyou

What solution are you reading for you daily performance? It should be the same as your tuning solution.
Go to the following link to order: http://www.perkinelmer.com/Catalog/Product/ID/N8125030
You could also make it yourself it is10 ppb Mg,Cu,Rh,Cd, In,Ba,Ce, Pb, and U in 1% HNO3
If you make it yourself be very carful because if it is made just a little wrong it can throw off your tune and it will be a disaster!
After the solution is aspirated, open workspace and there is a tuning file. I have an Elan 9000 is it may be a little different. If you are still having trouble, post the values that you get on your tune.

Hello Riverbrat,
Thank you for the response .
I ordered the perkink elmer solution called the mass cal stability solution.
I did my tuning and nebulizer flow optimization and then the daily performance with the same solution.
I got the impressive results.
Now, second step is calibration for my standards.
Can you tell me what concentrations should I use for As, Cd, Pb, Hg for calibration.
And a little brief as to how should I go about it.
thank you

Great!
Your calibration depends on your needs. On our Elan 9000's, with a Scott spray chamber, calibrate As and Pb are with a blank, standard at 1 ug/L, 20, 50 and 100 ug/L. Cd calibrates with a low standard of 0.5 ug/L. We have a seperate Hg analyzer.

Hello Riverbrat,
Thank you for the reponse.
When you say As and Pb calibrate with a blank, as in run the blank
and then standards of the concentrations you mentioned , am I right?
Thank you
|

Yes, you set up all of the standard concentrations, including the calibration blank in the method. In the sample list there is a column with the option (when you right click) to run blank and standards....make sure the first sample has that selected.

Mg= 67172 but suppose to be 100,000 and blk is 34 suppose to be 30

Thanks,

Check your specks again I think your Mg only needs to be >40000. 67172 is a great response for Mg. As for the BG try backing off the Neb flo and see if that helps.

Hello Ruckle,
thanks for replying. but here I have attached my spec which says >10M cps for Mg
also do you mean that I have to decrease my nebulizer flow (backing off mean) to get good BG.
THANKS,
Bhanu

Attached are the specs I go by right out of my Elan manual, so I dont know if they have changed them or what but I never get over 100,000 for Mg.
