Job Description

We are looking to recruit a BioMedBridges Project Manager who will be responsible for the day-to-day running of the BioMedBridges project. They will be based at the European Bioinformatics Institute (EBI) located on the Wellcome Trust Genome Campus near Cambridge in the UK.
 
BioMedBridges is funded as a European Commission grant in response to FP7 Call 8 2.3.2. The project was awarded €10.6M for 4 years. It involves 21 organisations, who together will deliver 12 Work packages. The aim of the grant is to "build data bridges" between the ESFRI Biological and Medical Sciences (BMS) Research Infrastructures and the participants represent the ESFRI BMS Research Infrastructures and the European e-Infrastructures. The deliverables are infrastructure components that will provide computational 'data and service' bridges between the ESFRI BMS RI, clustering them together and linking basic biological research data to data in the other domains. Provide secure, robust and ethical access to biological data for a wide range of users will be the major effort of the project.
 
The main responsibilities of the project manager will be:

    Day-to-day management of the project;
    Organisation of logistics of project meetings and working groups;
    Communicating with the Scientific Advisory Board;
    Coordinating and writing reports on the project for the Commission;
    Ensuring timely delivery of the deliverables;
    Coordinating communication between the different partners;
    Gathering financial information from partners;
    Completing financial forms for the Commission with local experts; and
    Liaising with the Commission on behalf of the project.

The post holder will report to the Director of the EBI - Professor Janet Thornton who is coordinating the project on behalf of ELIXIR.

Qualifications and Experience

The successful applicant will be a graduate but may also have a Ph.D. in the Life Sciences and should have a proven track record in scientific or technical programme management. Experience of EU projects would be particularly valuable. (S)he should be familiar with modern technologies used for communicating, report writing and monitoring progress and experience of working with multiple partners from different countries across Europe would be a distinct advantage. Some experience of bioinformatics would be an advantage but is not essential.
 
The post requires excellent communication, interpersonal and team working skills and the post holder would be a well organised scientist who combines administrative flair with the ability to handle multiple partners and still deliver a project on time and effectively. They will be used to working with scientists from across Europe and managing challenging organisational issues.
 
The successful candidate will be proficient in the use of Word, Excel, Power Point, email etc and must have excellent spoken and written English skills. A good working knowledge of another European language will be an asset.
