The Clinical Research Fellow will undertake agreed research and educational activities to develop new techniques to improve patient care.
Clinical Duties
Clinical Duties will be undertaken around 16% under an honorary contract with the NHS Golden Jubilee National Waiting Times Hospital, Clydebank or NHS Glasgow. The
management of the
clinical activity will be the full responsibility of the NHS Organisation. On-call will be possible as part of a separate arrangement with the NHS in addition to the 16%. The university cannot provide
clinical work and so, in the unlikely event that the NHS Organisation withdraws the honorary contract, the University will not be able to continue this post and notice of termination will be served.
Research and Teaching
Research will be undertaken in the Academic Unit of Surgery at Glasgow Royal Infirmary. Research programmes are in place covering both
clinical and
basic research of colorectal
cancer, breast
cancer, urological
cancer, pancreatic and gastro-intestinal
cancer as well as more fundamental research in
inflammation and transplantation
science. Research activities will include:
• Lead aspects of assigned research to contribute to knowledge in the field/discipline in support of the departmental research strategy
• Plan, design and implement projects and/or experiments, in conjunction with collaborators as appropriate
• Write and submit applications to ethics committees as appropriate
• Contribute to the development of selection procedures for
focus groups and interviews
• Undertake
data collection and
analysis
• Document research results, select journals for publication, and take the lead on writing papers for publication in peer-reviewed journals
• Facilitate and maintain communication within research teams, including representing projects at collaborators’ meetings and contributing to project-related websites
• Contribute to the safe and efficient functioning of laboratories and facilities
• Collaborate with colleagues and participate in team meetings/discussions and departmental research group activities
• Present work at internal departmental or group seminars and external seminars and/or national and international conferences to enhance the profile of the research group
• Supervise the organisation of project workshops, seminars or conferences
• Establish and maintain an expert reputation and track record of publications in field/discipline
• Contribute to identifying potential
funding sources and making applications to support future research
funding
• Participate in the supervision and training of junior research staff, undergraduate or postgraduate students, and/or technical staff
• Keeping up-to-date with recent literature and advances in the field/discipline
• Contribute to the development of new ideas or approaches and develop new lines of investigation or activity supportive of the divisional research strategy.
Contribute to teaching and/or administration as assigned by the Head of Unit, which may include:
Lecturing to Final Year MB ChB Students on their Surgery attachment, marking workbooks,
supervising
Clinical Skills sessions for 2nd, 3rd & 4th year MB ChB & Dental Students and Special Study Modules, Examination Duties.
