The recently established C.H.S. research group "Proteostasis in Neurodegenerative Disease" at the German Cancer Research Center (DKFZ) and CellNetworks is seeking a motivated PostDoc interested in mechanisms of protein misfolding and its link to neurodegenerative diseases.


The DKFZ is a world-leading institution in the field of applied and basic biomedical research and is closely integrated into the Heidelberg research campus. Translational neuroscience research plays a central role in Heidelberg and our group is part of the CellNetworks Cluster of Excellence (http://www.cellnetworks.uni-hd.de), giving access to state of the art facilities such as the Nikon Imaging Center.


Our young and motivated team studies the complementary processes of protein misfolding and aggregation which underpin the pathogenesis of common diseases of old age, most notably, cancer and neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer's and Parkinson’s disease. The overall goal of our work is to advance our biomedical understanding of the molecular events triggered by protein misfolding and the subsequent impact of protein aggregates on cellular integrity. The efforts of our group are focused on the molecular mechanisms of neuronal degeneration linked to the accumulation and spreading of aggregated protein species.


The main focus of this project, is the detailed characterisation of protein aggregates linked to these diseases in cell culture as well as novel Drosophila models developed in our group. The successful applicant will deal with a great variety of methods, ranging from basic molecular biology, proteinchemistry, and cell culture to cutting-edge technologies such as high-throughput RNAi screening and multiparametric fluorescence imaging. The applicant will furthermore be enrolled in additional national and international collaborative projects.


The successful applicant should be highly motivated, work efficiently and independently and have a deep interest in protein biochemistry and neurodegenerative diseases. Applicants should hold a doctorate degree in biochemistry, biology or closely related fields. Expertise in molecular and cellular biology methodology, tissue culture as well as Drosophila research and good proficiency in English are required. The position is limited for 2 years with the possibility of extension.
