Look at the GrantsNet (http://sciencecareers.sciencemag.org/funding?CFID=551921&CFTOKEN=38609591), a searchable, continuously updated, database of funding opportunities in biomedical research and science education. It contains programs that offer training and research funding for graduate and medical students, postdoctoral fellows, and junior faculty, as well as programs in science, math, engineering, and technology for undergraduate faculty and students. Special tools and resources will help you customize your search to quickly find the information you need, keep you up to date with the latest trends in research and education funding, and give you the inside scoop on how to write winning grant applications. In particular, this site http://sciencecareers.sciencemag.org/career_development/previous_issues/articles/0210/grants_and_grant_writing_index offers you a number of articles about writing successful grant applications. Good luck, Val

I found the article "The Top Eight Things to Do to Write Great Grants" very useful. You'll find it here.

Hi, I recently attended a grant writing workshop. It was quite excellent! The grant application writer's workbook [phs sf424 (R&R) application guide (04/2006)] by Stephan W. Russell and David C. Morrison is a valauble source. .

One word of specific advice/experience in case you are writing a grant to the NIH. Like it or not, they apparently really want to see a testable hypothesis, not just a question being asked. For instance, write something like "I propose to test that filipodial extensions turn over at a much faster rate when BDNF is present at a potential synapse by using [such and such technology]." That's opposed to "I propose to see what BDNF does to synapse formation." Make it really specific, or they apparently wont' give it high priority for funding. How do I know? I got turned down for a grant because I did the latter and that's what my grant review said. =)
good luck to all you grant writers out there!

A good source is the program officer. There is a strong misconception that they are irrelevant. Its not the case. They have all the knowledge and updated priorities for their areas of research. Send him/her a brief synopsis of what you are planning to submit (2 pgs). They will critize it and give many insights to problematic areas. Good luck!
