POSITION : Research Fellow
SCHOOL/DEPARTMENT : School of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering
REFERENCE: 10/101419
CLOSING DATE : 4.00 pm, Friday 6 August 2010.
SALARY : £29,853 to £33,620 per annum.
ANTICIPATED INTERVIEW DATE : 24 August 2010
CONTRACT DURATION : Available from October 2010 for 12 months.
 
JOB PURPOSE :
To be an active member within the Biomaterials Research group to assist in the planning and delivery of research within the area of acrylic and calcium phosphate bone cements for bone tissue engineering.
 
MAJOR DUTIES :
Develop and plan research within the area of acrylic and calcium phosphate bone cements for bone tissue engineering and/or undertake research as a member of the Biomaterials Research group.
 
Design, develop and refine experimental apparatus and experiments appropriate to acrylic and calcium phosphate bone cements for bone tissue engineering.
 
Carry out analyses, critical evaluations, and interpretations using methodologies and other techniques appropriate to area of acrylic and calcium phosphate bone cements for bone tissue engineering.
 
Present regular progress reports on research to members of the Biomaterials Research group or to external audiences to disseminate and publicise research findings.
 
Prepare, often in consultation with line-manager, material for publication in national and international journals and presentations at international conferences.
 
Assist grant holder in the preparation of funding proposals and applications to external bodies.
 
Carry out routine administrative tasks associated with the research project/s to ensure that project/s are completed on time and within budget. These might include organisation of project meetings and documentation, financial control, risk assessment of research activities.
 
Carry out undergraduate supervision, demonstrating or lecturing duties within the area of expertise and under the direct guidance of a member of academic staff.
 
Read academic papers, journals and textbooks to keep abreast of developments in own specialism and related disciplines.
 
Planning and Organising:
 
Plan for specific aspects of research programmes. Timescales range from 1-3 months in advance and contribute to research group planning.
 
Plan for the use of research resources, laboratories and workshops where appropriate.
 
Plan own day-to day activity within framework of the agreed research programme.
 
Plan up to 6 months in advance to meet deadlines for journal publications and to prepare presentations and papers for conferences.
 
Coordinate and liaise with other members of the research group over work progress.
 
Resource Management Responsibilities:
 
Ensure research resources are used in an effective and efficient manner.
 
Provide guidance as required to support staff and any students who may be assisting with research.
 
Internal and External Relationships:
 
Liaise on a regular basis with colleagues and students.
 
Build internal contacts and participate in internal networks for the exchange of information and to form relationships for future collaboration.
 
Join external networks to share information and ideas.
 
Contribute to the School's outreach programme by establishing links with local community groups, industries etc.
 
 
ESSENTIAL CRITERIA :
 
1. 2:1 Honours Degree or equivalent in an engineering or polymer science subject.
 
2. Hold or be about to submit a PhD in mechanical, manufacturing, electrical, bioengineering, polymer engineering or related subject.
 
3. At least 3 years relevant research experience in a related research area.
 
4. Have participated in laboratory-based research involving materials development, characterisation and testing.
 
5. Significant knowledge of relevant biomaterials processing, characterisation and testing for joint replacement surgery.
 
6. Capable of coordinating and motivating other team members.
 
7. Have given lectures or laboratory classes relevant to Materials Science and/or Material Characterisation to at least undergraduate level.
 
8. Significant knowledge of the biomaterials processing, characterisation and testing.
 
9. Skills in managing and motivating research staff and students.
 
10. Ability to secure grants independently or as a leader of a section in a project.
 
11. Ability to devise, advise on and manage research programmes.
 
12. Be able to communicate easily with academic and industrial collaborators.
 
13. Evidence of good presentation skills.
 
14. Evidence of good technical writing skills.
 
15. Demonstrable intellectual ability.
 
16. Ability to assess and organise resources.
 
17. Must be willing to work at other sites for short periods of time.
 
18. Must be willing to attend conferences and meetings worldwide, for example to deliver presentations.
 
 
DESIRABLE CRITERIA :
 
1. 1st Class Honours Degree in an engineering or polymer science subject.
 
2. Have experience of working in collaboration with industry or with medical personnel (e.g. placement or vacation work).
 
3. Experience of working in a multi-disciplinary team.
 
4. Have given lectures or laboratory classes relevant to Materials Science and/or Material Characterisation to at least postgraduate level.
 
5. Have supervised undergraduate students undertaking project work.
 
6. Regularly presented oral podium presentations at international conferences.
 
7. Authored peer-reviewed technical papers in high impact biomaterials related journals.
 
8. Hold valid current driving licence or ability to fulfil the mobility requirements of the post.
