Blood Systems Research Institute (
www.bsrisf.org), an affiliate of the University of California, San Francisco, has openings for six (6) full-time 8- to 10-week paid internship positions beginning June 2010.  Selected students are eligible for a stipend for the successful completion of an 8- or 10-week period.  Students will participate in seminars, presentations and social events throughout the period.

The Summer Internship Program at BSRI provides undergraduate and master’s students the opportunity to participate in research in the areas of transfusion medicine and cellular therapy through pairing with an investigator/mentor in one of the following research areas:

  1. Learn to hunt new viruses using the latest metagenomic and bioinformatic methods.  We are currently looking for new enteric viruses causing flaccid paralysis, encephalitis, and gastroenteritis as well as blood borne viruses. Dr. Eric Delwart(http://drop.io/bsrivdiscovery)
    (
    http://www.bsrisf.org/i-edelwart.html)

  2. Opportunities for research experience in an immunology laboratory.  Ongoing research projects that focus on the immune control of HIV and West Nile virus infections and immune perturbation associated with blood transfusion.  Dr. Philip Norris (http://www.bsrisf.org/i-pnorris.html)

  3. An internship is offered to participate in the study of liver development and transplantation. Dr. Marcus Muench (http://www.bsrisf.org/i-mmuench.html)

  4. Epidemiologic research in blood safetyavailability, or risk perceptions of transfusion. Assist with data analysis on current epidemiology and health economics projects or bibliographic research toward writing a scientific paper.  Dr. Brian Custer (http://www.bsrisf.org/i-bcuster.html) and/or Dr. Edward Murphy (http://www.bsrisf.org/i-emurphy.html)

  5. Opportunities exist in the Viral entry lab to gain research experience in molecular and cellular virology. Ongoing projects focus on mechanisms of viral entry for emerging infectious agents such as SARS-CoV, Ebola and Chikungunya, as well as development of novel methods of inhibition.  Dr. Graham Simmons (http://www.bsrisf.org/i-gsimmons.html)

  6. Opportunities for research experience in Viral Reference Laboratory and Repository.  Assist in gathering data on peripheral blood mononuclear cell isolation from blood remotely drawn from Blood Systems Research Institution. Dr. Tobler. (http://www.bsrisf.org/i-ltobler.html)
