European scientist from Germany (60%) and 73% non German from 30 different countries were surveyed.
Researchers attitude toward therapeutic abortions meaning percentages of responders who felt termination would be considered ethically acceptable if the unborn child would most likely have the condition:
-Be severly mentally retarded-78%
-Die of disease by age four-73%
-Develop chronic painful disease in childhood-61%
-Develop a disease causing death as a young adult-36%
-Developing a totally debiliating disease at age 50-26%

Was there any mention of when the termination would occur? The timing may affect a persons opinion. Is there a link to your data source?

This a very interesting article published in Genetic Engineering News of June 15, 2005. It is under Point of view (page 6) and is to compare German scientists versus other scientists in Europe, somehow the survey show that German scientists are more conservative regarding issues related to genetics such as: abortion due to gene defect analysis, screening and confidentiality, somatic cell gene therapy, germ-line intervention, etc. Here I averaged out opinions of Germans and other europeans. Separately mentioned for example for the first Issue:
-To abort a severly mentally retarded, only 75% of German scientists would agree compared to 79% of the rest of scientists surveyed in Europe.

The differences aren't so great, but I'm not surprised considering the lingering effects of NAZI Germany. I'm of German heritage myself and I can say from my own experience with Germans that there is a tendancy to tread softly regarding anything that may have to do with eugenics.

Thanks for the source info, I'll try to see if I can find a copy.
