I would also like to welcome everyone to the environmental analysis section of Scientist Solutions.

In performing analytical chemistry on environmental samples, we are often faced with issues which range from sample prep to the instrument. The problems are often confounded when the issue may manifest in one part of the process, but the solution may be in another.

With hope, through this forum, we should be able to assist each others with the problems we face in this area of research.

Sincerely,

Greg Pronger

How can one cofirm that a soil that is polluted by crude oil has been bioremediated by spent mushroom substrate.

Thanks.

Preks,

There are two typical approaches taken to measure effectiveness of remediation. First, would be to utilize GC-FID and simply look at the overall hydrocarbon pattern to reduce. In the US, we would call this a "TPH" or "Total Petroleum Hydrocarbon" analysis. Alternatively (or in conjunction with) would be to monitor the polyaromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) as indicators of contamination. The later is beneficial since much of the toxicity and carcinogenicity is due to the PAHs.
