Replied to topic in Stem Cell Biology forum   hES cell media

The following review is a good place to start: Development of serum-free culture systems for human embryonic stem cells. Chase LG, Firpo MT. Curr Opin Chem Biol. 2007 Aug;11(4):367-72. We've maintained ES cells using Invitrogen products using Knock-Out serum replacement and bFGF. Cells are m ...

Replied to topic in General forum   Is it ok to apply to multiple jobs in the same company?

I think yes. My general rule is to assume that anything that can go wrong with Human Resources will go wrong. Better to have two CVs in their hands than to have one in the wrong pile. If it is possible to contact HR, then you could do so and ask them. I think is always ok to contact the pers ...

Replied to topic in General forum   Frustrated!!! Can't find it in PubMed?

I recently had free access to Scopus and found it to be good, although I didn't get a chance to explore all aspects of the service. Scopus also has a different citation ranking system from ISI's impact factor that I thought was interesting. They take into account citations and number of papers ...

Replied to topic in Neuroscience forum   Importance of individual data

Well this is a fairly broad question. I assume your talking about studies performed on small animals (rodents) in which case one has a decent sized number of experimental and control animals. Generally in my experience data are presented as median ± range or sometimes mean ± SE. The former ha ...

Replied to topic in Cell Culture and Tissue Culture forum   flow cytometry of mouse spleen

CV = coefficient of variation I'm not totally sure why you had to use the mouse and rabbit serum. Generally, when using directly labeled antibodies, then mouse serum can be used to block non-specific binding. However, when using a secondary antibody, you would have no benefit unless you use ser ...

That will depend on what your trying to fix and mostly likely more than one option will be available. Just like today, we have blood stem cell transplants using cord blood, mobilized blood progenitors and bone marrow.

Replied to topic in Immunology forum   Cell strainers/mesh

Yes, those mesh filters tend to have a long delivery time. Go to VWR or Fisher and search: Spectra Mesh* Woven Membrane Filters, Spectrum* Laboratories They have all kinds of sizes and types. I used to use a polypropylene mesh added on top of a large pore metal mesh, used to support the po ...

Replied to topic in General forum   Sarah Palin speaks about Drosophila (Fruit Fly) Research

According to this blog, the actual study in question may have had to do with a species of Drosophila that is an agricultural pest rather than biomedical research. http://www.the-scientist.com/blog/display/55137/ Nonetheless, she probably had no idea what she was talking about anyway. It is ju ...
