Faculty Position
ORGANIC CHEMISTRY
Johns Hopkins University

Department of Chemistry of Johns Hopkins University invites applications for a faculty position in the general area of organic chemistry. Applications are encouraged from organic chemists with interests at the biology interface, broadly defined. The search is directed at the Assistant Professor level, though exceptional candidates for tenured ranks will also be considered. The new position has an anticipated starting date of July 1, 2009. Applicants should submit a curriculum vitae and description of research plans as PDF attachments to eval(unescape('%64%6f%63%75%6d%65%6e%74%2e%77%72%69%74%65%28%27%3c%61%20%68%72%65%66%3d%22%6d%61%69%6c%74%6f%3a%63%68%65%6d%73%65%61%72%63%68%2d%6f%72%67%40%6a%68%75%2e%65%64%75%22%3e%63%68%65%6d%73%65%61%72%63%68%2d%6f%72%67%40%6a%68%75%2e%65%64%75%3c%2f%61%3e%27%29%3b')) and also arrange to have three letters of reference e-mailed by reviewers to the same address. Mail may be addressed to Organic Chemistry Search Committee, c/o Rosalie Elder, Department of Chemistry, Johns Hopkins University, 3400 N. Charles Street, Baltimore, MD 21218.  I am writing to apply for

I am writing to apply for the position of Visiting Professor of Organic chemistry offer by your Jonhns Hopkins University, as advertised on Internet. I am working as Full Professor of Organic Chemistry at the University of Ain Shams, Cairo, Egypt.  I am extremely interested in obtaining a faculty position at your respected Jonhns Hopkins University USA, as its Science research programs have a stellar reputation that is known to me.

I believe that my academic training and my postdoctoral of several years of experience in European Union (Geramny, Spain and Portugal) working as organic chemist teaching and research prepare me to be an effective teaching, researcher and instructor in your Department. My doctoral dissertation was conducted under the direction of the eminent Professor Thomas R. Hoye, Minnesota University, USA in collaboration with Ain Shams University, Egypt and used of a new methodology for the modern organic synthesis, which is using for asymmetric synthesis, organometallic synthesis and synthesis of asymmetric catalysis.

During my postgraduate trained for several years at Ain Shams University (Egypt) and Minnesota University (USA). I have been fortunate enough to serve as a teaching assistant at University of Minnesota, USA and occasionally instruct for an intermediate level course on modern organic synthesis. My several years of professional experience as an organic chemist have provided me with a broad view that is useful in assisting students with projects and assignments. Through my participation as a teaching assistant, Lecturer, Assistant Professor and Associate professor, visiting consultant and foreign professor I have developed confidence and an interest in teaching and look forward to the opportunity to both teach assigned classes and to develop my own classes. I always am using the Information technology (IT), computer programs that essential for the teaching tools in teaching. Beside that, I used the several sophisticated tools that are essential for teaching the modern organic synthesis and Bio-information technology.

My research and teaching interests have been fostered by several years of graduate, undergraduate teaching and mentoring at Ain Shams University during my academic job. I have taught several courses such as Heterocyclic, Stereochemistry, Spectroscopy (IR, UV, 1H NMR and 13C NMR (1D & 2D), Chemistry of Lipids, Chemotherapy, Vitamins and Amino Acids also discussion and laboratory sections for both introductory organic chemistry and for introductory orgnometallic chemistry for many years. In addition, I also taught a section of laboratory course on the principles and techniques of asymmetric synthesis, asymmetric catalysis synthesis and supervised the graduate and undergraduate research of several students at Otto-von-Guerick Magdeburg University, Regensburg University, Germany, Ain Shams University, Balochistan University and Southern Methodist University.

My research has focused upon synthesis of the novel sophisticated organic compounds by using organometallic methodology. In meantime many dissertations research on organic synthesis built upon this topic under my supervision direct and indirect. This research and the projects that will stem from it can be adapted to provide graduate and undergraduates with research opportunities for their Senior Honors projects at Jonhns Hopkins University, and would also complement the existing strengths of the department.

My academic experiences as postdoctoral and as visiting professor have reinforced my appreciation for the Minho University, Braga (Portugal), Otto-von-Guerick Magdeburg University (Germany),Regensburg University, (Germany), Murcia University (Spain), Minnesota University (USA), Ain Shams University (Egypt), Sultan Qaboose University (Oman), Balochistan University (Pakistan) and Southern Methodist University (USA) environment.

I have gained several teaching experiences, active learning opportunities, and interdisciplinary students motivated by curiosity and love of learning.

I look forward to become part of the Jonhns Hopkins University community and I think your  College is better environment which to grow as an educator and scientist.

I am enclosing my CV, Biographic data and statement of teaching philosophy. Letters of recommendation are being mailed under separate cover with your request.

Thank you very much for your consideration.

 Yours truly,

Abdel-Sattar S. Hamad Elgazwy
