Title:  Assistant Specialist Step I- Step III-Neuroscience - Molecular and Cell Biology Assistant Specialist:  We are seeking a highly motivated individual to support the Ngai lab’s BRAIN Initiative project to demonstrate feasibility on applying several new technologies, including high-throughput single cell transcriptome profiling and CRISPR-based genome engineering, to the characterization of cellular diversity in the mammalian cerebral cortex. As part of an NIH-funded BRAIN Initiative project that includes 10 research groups and 3 technology core facilities on the UC Berkeley campus, this individual will be an integral member of a dynamic, multidisciplinary team of neuroscientists, molecular biologists, genomics technologists, mouse geneticists, statisticians and computer scientists to develop and deploy new technologies for creating a taxonomy of cell types in the brain. Responsibilities: The successful candidate will assist and collaborate with senior lab personnel on the following aspects of the Ngai Lab’s NIH-funded BRAIN Initiative project: preparation of cells and reagents for single cell RNA sequencing experiments; processing and quality control of samples for high-throughput Illumina sequencing; single- and double-label RNA in situ hybridization; design and preparation of DNA and RNA constructs for CRISPR-based genome engineering of mouse ES cells and mouse zygotes; ES cell culture and genome engineering; organization and archiving of data for reports and publication.Minimum/Basic Qualifications Required (By the time of application):Applicants must possess a bachelor’s degree or equivalent degree in biology or related field.Additional Required Qualifications (By start date):Hands-on experience in routine molecular biology (molecular cloning, PCR, plasmid design and construction; cell culture including ES cell culture and transfection; microfluidics technologies; biochemistry; immunohistochemistry; single- and double-label RNA in situ hybridization; handling samples in and organizing data from high-throughput format experiments. Hands-on experience with epifluorescence and confocal light microscopy.Preferred Qualifications (By start date):Working knowledge in mammalian neuroanatomy and bioinformatics analysis; experience working in a research laboratory.Appointment:This position reports to Dr. John Ngai.  The initial appointment will be for 100% time for 1 year with the expectation of extension based on availability of funds.
