What effects do genetically modified (GM) products have on the environment?
GM crops may have both positive and negative impact on the environment.
Many of the varieties are targeted either for resistance to disease or pests and may have high nutritional requirements which would be more carbon positive than traditional varieties.
GM crops like BT (Bacillus thuringiensis toxin) do cause death of Monarch butterfly caterpillars and affect biodiversity.
Pests can develop resistance to BT toxin just like mosquitoes.
There is always a threat of horizontal gene trnasfer from GM crop to another.
GM crops also have several advantages. Turns out that most of plant biotech companies develop GM crops keeping in mind the farmers in developed countries. Three developing countries, China, India, Brazil- have modest resources allocated to this end. This prevents the crops from getting to poor and developing countries.
