The authors in this study show that Bacillus anthracis senses the host environment using the carbonate levels (in the blood)as a cue. The uptake of bicarbonate by an ABC transporter leads to bicarbonate induced expression of toxin genes. And mutation in the ABC transporter leads to reduced virulence of the bacterium. This pathway of virulance induction looks like a good antibacterial target.
It would be interesting to see if this strategy is used by other bacterial pathogens.[/i]
