Stem Cell Theranostics is dedicated to accelerating the discovery and development of novel medicines for heart disease using patient-derived cardiac disease models. Our core technology is based on a decade of work at the Stanford University School of Medicine. We specialize in the generation of patient-specific stem cells and the subsequent derivation of innovative disease models. Our unique access to patient populations and strength in cell biology has enabled the development of a suite of inherited heart disease models that can now be used in investigating disease mechanisms, drug discovery and personalized medicine.
 
JOB DESCRIPTION
We are seeking independent and motivated senior research associates and scientists to join a growing scientific team focused on iPS cell derivation, cardiac differentiation and cardiac disease modeling and drug screening. These positions require expertise in reprogramming and routine culturing of induced pluripotent stem (iPS) cells, characterization and differentiation of these cells, assay development, drug screening as well as standard molecular biology procedures, immunofluorescence microscopy, cellular cryopreservation and cell banking. The candidates must demonstrate a thorough knowledge of experimental design, underlying scientific principles and the ability to independently assess results.
 
Successful candidates will be expected to:

  • Carry out reprogramming of human somatic cell into induced pluripotent stem (iPS) cells
  • Maintain reprogramed iPS cell lines in culture
  • Conduct iPS cell characterization using basic molecular techniques
  • Cryopreserve and bank newly derived iPS cell lines
  • Differentiate iPS cell lines into functional cardiomyocytes (CMs)
  • Conduct CM characterization using basic molecular techniques
  • Design, develop and optimize phenotypic assays using CMs in line with industry accepted assay performance standards (day to day reproducibility, Z’>0.5, DMSO tolerance etc.)
  • Execute compound screening on CMs in low to medium throughput including, but not limited to, the following modalities: Ca2+ imaging, caffeine stimulated Ca2+ release, MEA, luminescent and fluorescent plate reader, brightfield / fluorescence microscopy and force cytometry.
  • Conduct molecular mechanism of action studies
  • Troubleshoot assays and identify root cause to solve scientific problems
  • Maintain excellent quality control records
  • Maintain stock inventory for lab supplies
  • Ensure equipment maintenance
  • Provide training to other staff in stem cell culture techniques

  • Contribute ideas and suggestions to improve standard laboratory techniques, protocols and processes
  • Maintain professional expertise through familiarity with current scientific literature and competitor products
  • Comply with ethical, legal, and regulatory requirements and company safety regulations and procedures
  • May be required to perform other related duties as assigned by leadership

 
SCOPE
Position exercises judgment within broadly defined practices and policies. The individual must be able to judge cell culture progress and quality. Position requires the individual to perform the duties listed above with only general direction from the Director. The person will understand the importance of the role in relationship to the company’s values and business objectives. Excellent verbal, written communication and presentation skills are essential. This job will require a moderate degree of complexity. Focus will primarily be in the cell culture laboratory.
 
QUALIFICATIONS
Requires a Bachelor’s degree in the area of Cell Biology, Molecular Biology, Biotechnology or other related discipline. A Master’s degree or PhD in a specific scientific discipline is highly desirable.
 
EXPERIENCE
Requires a minimum of 2-5 years of cell culture experience and/or demonstrated competence in utilizing automated screening platforms, procedures and processes, preferably in industry, is a requirement.
 
Additional Information & Physical Requirements:

  • May require sitting or standing at a bench, hood or automated workstation for extended periods of time to conduct profiling experiments and maintain cell cultures
  • Able to work in a BSL 2 setting with potential exposure to human tissues and fluids
  • Able to have a flexible work schedule based on project demands
  • Able to work at a computer for extended periods of time
  • May require lifting upwards of 40 lbs

 
SALARY & COMPENSATION
Salary and compensation package will be commensurate with education, relevant work experience and other qualifications. The successful candidate will also be eligible to enroll in the companies medical, dental and vision insurance plans and participate in 401K benefits program.
