Research Associate in Industrial Biotechnology

UCL Department of Biochemical Engineering
Research Associate in Industrial Biotechnology Biorefinery Process Development
The appointment will be full time on UCL Grade 7. The salary range will be £32,375 - £39,132 per annum, inclusive of London Allowance.
The UCL Department of Biochemical Enigneering is one of the leading international centres for biocatalysis and bioprocess research in the Industrial Biotechnology sector. It has excellent research facilities for synthetic biology, automated high throughput bioprocess studies and a full-scale £25m bioprocessing pilot plant. A new Research Associate position is available as part of a BBSRC-funded project to examine the creation of value-added products from spent distillers’ grain. This is part of a collaborative programme with groups at the universities of Bath, Birmingham and Reading.
The Postdoctoral Researcher will examine enzymatic methods for the fractionation of distillers’ grain and their transformation into value-added compounds. This is a position requiring multidisciplinary skills that could range from enzyme cloning and kinetic evaluation through to small scale bioprocess design and operation. The precise nature of the role will be specified depending on the applications received. A high degree of interaction with the other partners will be necessary so excellent team-working and communication skills will be required. The postholder will be responsible for reporting on project progress and the preparation and submission of research papers arising from these and related studies.
The postholder will hold a PhD in a relevant discipline, including Biochemistry, Molecular Biology, Biochemical or Chemical Engineering, and ideally possess experience in one or more of the following areas: cloning, enzyme expression and kinetic evaluation, laboratory automation, biocatalysis, bioprocess design and scale-up.
The post will be funded for 33 months, in the first instance.
