Research Assistant in Imperial College London – Department of Medicine, Virology Section
Salary Range: £26,860 – £29,850 per annum
An opportunity has arisen for a Research Assistant to work within the Virology Section based at the St Mary’s campus, Paddington.You will work as part of a team studying the immune evasion strategies of vaccinia virus (VACV) under the direction of Professor G L. Smith FRS. The position is funded by a Wellcome Trust Programme Grant to study the structure and function of VACV proteins that inhibit aspects of the innate immune response to infection. This work will involve the construction of recombinant viruses, analysis of protein expression in infected cells and protein-protein interactions, protein expression and purification for crystallography, study of virus virulence in vivo and investigation of the cellular and humoral immune response to infection. Protein crystallography will be collaboration with Professor David Stuart FRS at the University of Oxford.
Applicants should have a strong academic record and a degree in biological or medical science (preferably 2.1 or 1st). Research experience in immunology, virology, molecular biology or protein chemistry would be advantageous. Good accuracy, communication and organisation skills, and the ability to work independently and as part of a team are necessary.
The post is full-time, fixed-term and available until 31 December 2014.
