Postdoctoral Researcher – Molecular Tumor Biology (sr-02517)
The Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology at SOUTHERN RESEARCH INSTITUTE in Birmingham, Alabama is seeking to fill a postdoctoral opportunity in the Radiation and Cancer Biology Lab. Southern Research, a not-for-profit research organization with over 500 professional and support personnel, uses an interdisciplinary approach to translating basic research into FDA-approved drugs. The institute's scientists are credited with the discovery of seven currently used drugs approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) including carmustine, lomustine, dacarbazine, fludarabine, amifostine, clofarabine and the latest pralatrexate (approved in 2009). Currently Southern Research is a designated comprehensive center of the National Cancer Institute’s Chemical Biology Consortium. We are seeking applicants who are highly motivated, enthusiastic for basic and translational cancer research and can work independently with projects funded by NIH. The objective of the project is to determine signaling pathways involved in the crosstalk between tumor cells and tumor microenvironment and to identify drugs that can interrupt the crosstalk. The candidate will identify and characterize cancer stem cells and will establish the impact of soluble factors from the tumor microenvironment on the stem cell compartment. Candidates must have a PhD in Cellular Biology, Molecular Biology, Immunology, Genetics or related scientific discipline with experience in cancer related research. Candidates should have solid experience performing independent research and a demonstrated publication record. Prior experience in signaling transduction and cancer biology is essential. Experience working with cancer stem cells and 3D cultures is highly desirable. Candidates should be highly motivated, have strong organizational, written and verbal skills, and have the ability to work both independently and as part of a laboratory team.
