We have an exciting opportunity for a PhD scientist to embark on a basic research project in the area of gut microbiota interactions with the host, especially interactions with the gut epithelium and how that interaction influences the whole-body metabolism.

Your work will be focused on knock-out in vivo models models, both complete knock-out and intestinal knock-out (Villin-Cre) to be able to understand the importance of the gut specific interactions as opposed to whole-body deficiency. You’ll be studying specific effects of target on the gut microbiota using 16S RNA based profiling. Importantly, you’ll also be investigating the specific in vivo effects of the gut microbiota. The animals will be carefully characterized metabolically. Moreover, specific small molecular inhibitors of the target will be used to investigate the effects of pharmacologic treatment on the gut microbiota and metabolism. This opportunity will involve close interactions with both scientists at AstraZeneca and Gothenburg University. At AstraZeneca you will be exposed to and learn about the pharmaceutical drug discovery process.

Your major responsibilities

• Design and conduct the original experiments and subsequent analyses
• Interact and collaborate with scientists across internal disciplines at AstraZeneca and the University
• Publish scientific papers and attend conferences to communicate novel findings to the research community

Minimum experience
A PhD in medical or natural sciences involving in vivo experiments and molecular biology

Preferred experience/requirements
• Strong team-working, organizational and communication skills
• Proven ability to design and carry out research independently
• Experience in in vivo techniques including the assessment of metabolic aspects
